*Official press release from the Australian Government 13-12-2012
Scientists have now discerned was has caused the events that have taken place over the last 48 hours in the ACT. Chemicals from the ANU, most likely from the water development test that took place the previous week, leaked into the water supply and multiplied creating the virus. Only those with extended exposure over the 5 day test were affected and the short half-life of the virus means that Canberra's water supply will be salvageable.
The virus affects brain activity, victims losing they're ability for all conscious thought. It would appear that the virus attacks through when conscious thought is very low and this is why it took hold overnight, whilst Canberrans were sleeping. The virus also speeds up metabolism making those infected violently hungry, which is why we are continuing the quarantine. We believe at this brains of those infected are highly sensitive, even to light coming through the eyes and that this is causing the nocturnal nature of those infected. Our scientist believe they can reverse the affects of the virus and an action plan is being developed.
So far there has been no confirmed reports of unaffected citizen or fatalities. We hope this disaster will be resolved soon.

Canberra in Quarrantine

A state of emergency has been declared over night as the city of Canberra, the nations capital has been swept by a fast acting virus. Details are still being confirmed but during the early hours of this morning, reports confirm that the residents of Canberra rose from slumber and filled the streets just before dawn. They then proceeded to go into hiding as day broke.
What has caused the unusual behaviour is still unknown.
Some speculate that it is a fast acting virus or chemical weapon. The Prime minister has declared a mass quarantine, urging all Australian's to stay in their homes. An emergency hotline has been set up however there have been no confirmed cases outside ACT state lines.
A perimeter around the ACT has been set up by HAZMAT and armed forces. Roadblocks at all major exits to the city have also been installed. Until deemed safe, no one is to cross ACT borders.

ANU water development test to go ahead.

With drought pressing hard on Australia for many years now the question of how to solve our water supply issues has been pushed upon the scientific community to answer. Pioneering researchers at the Australian National University seem to have come up with an answer. Ground breaking discoveries in the field of chemical mitosis have led to what some have described as the end of water shortage worldwide.
Realistically speaking, there is a lot of ground to cover before the scheme can be implemented world-wide. Although giant leaps have been made in application since the discovery just over a year ago, the science remains highly expensive in application. Some scientists believe it may be at least another five to ten years before it can be implemented in some over the world poorer countries. For the the moment however, the US, China and much of Europe have expressed extreme interest in the progress at the ANU.
ANU has just recently announced that they will begin medium scale tests starting on the 5th of December. The hope is that the facility will be replicated on a large scale at the start of the new year, creating water for Canberra and surrounding regions.
